When you picture a private island getaway, you might think of the Maldives, Fiji, or some tropical paradise in a far-flung corner of the world.

But you don’t have to travel halfway across the world to find one.

Scattered among the islands surrounding Batam and Bintan are secluded resorts where white-sand beaches, coral reefs and tropical forests come with a little more privacy and exclusivity.

Better still, these island escapes offer very different ideas of luxury.

Here are four private island escapes around Batam and Bintan that are closer to home than you might think.

1. Cempedak Private Island

If your idea of luxury is peace, privacy and a distinct lack of children shrieking and running around, Cempedak Private Island may be calling your name. Located off Bintan, Cempedak is an adults-only private island resort for guests aged 15 and above.

But its biggest visual calling card is its architecture. Rather than conventional concrete resort blocks, the island is dotted with dramatic hand-built bamboo structures. Its Seaview and Beach Villas continue that back-to-nature approach, with airy, open-plan living spaces designed to make the sea and forest part of the experience.

The island experience extends well beyond the villas. Spend an afternoon at the ocean-facing Rock Spa, explore the rainforest on a guided night walk or settle into Dodo Bar, built among giant granite boulders, for cocktails as the sun goes down.

Dining focuses on fresh, locally sourced ingredients with menus that change daily, while the resort’s focus on conservation includes efforts to minimise single-use plastics and protect the surrounding natural environment.

2. Nikoi Island

On the other hand, what if you have kids to bring along?

Cempedak’s sister property, Nikoi Island, takes a more family-friendly approach to barefoot luxury. The 15-hectare private island is surrounded by white-sand beaches and coral reefs, with plenty of space for kids to play and explore.

Accommodation comes in the form of one-, two- and three-bedroom beachfront houses, built using natural materials and finished with details such as driftwood. Open-plan spaces and private sun decks keep things breezy, while the beach is quite literally a few steps away.

There is plenty to do once you leave your villa, too. Guests can swim in pools tucked among granite boulders, play on grass tennis courts, head out on a yacht charter or spend the day kayaking, snorkelling and exploring the surrounding waters.

Meals are served in open-air dining pavilions, keeping the island atmosphere going even when you’re sitting down for dinner.

3. Twin Private Island

Some resorts are about looking at the ocean from your pool. At Twin Private Island, it’s all about getting into the ocean.

If you’re an avid diver or snorkeller, this resort is literally designed for you.

Located in Petong Island off the Galang coast of Batam, this marine-focused retreat puts you close to clear waters and relatively untouched coral reefs. From there, the sea becomes your playground. You can explore the house reef on scuba diving and snorkelling trips, paddle across the blue lagoon in a kayak or head further out on a sunset cruise.

Its seafront wooden villas offer air-conditioned accommodation, ensuite bathrooms and secluded ocean views, with direct access to the surrounding lagoon. And after spending the day underwater, you can return to the island for fresh seafood meals.

4. Ranoh Island

Not everyone escapes to an island to do absolutely nothing. Some of you might get really, really bored.

Ranoh Island, located among the southern Galang islands of Batam, combines the classic tropical-island ingredients of white sand, blue water and swaying coconut palms with enough activities to keep you occupied for your entire stay.

The island is particularly known for its watersports. Depending on what’s operating during your visit, you could find yourself bouncing around an inflatable ocean waterpark, riding a jet ski, trying ocean rafting or simply grabbing a kayak and heading onto the water. Taking a break in between? Claim a daybed or beanbag beneath the coconut trees, grab something from the beachfront restaurant and bar.

This sense of playfulness and activity is also reflected in their accommodations. Private Sea View Villas provide air-conditioned rooms and balconies overlooking the ocean, while the island’s Luxury Glamping Tents offer a more playful alternative: fully furnished, air-conditioned safari-style tents pitched right by the beach beneath the palms.

“Luxury” comes in many forms

Luxury might mean having your own plunge pool and an adults-only island, but it could also be spending time among coral reefs and clear lagoons. The best thing is that it doesn’t have to mean the same thing every time.

Whichever version sounds more like your kind of escape, you don’t necessarily need a long-haul flight to get there. From Berjaya Waterfront Ferry Terminal, comfortable air-conditioned ferries depart almost every hour, getting you to Batam and Bintan in about 90 minutes.

And the best part? You don’t have to spend Maldives or Fiji money to get a taste of the private island life.
