Batam is a lesser known island holiday destination in Indonesia that continues to offer visitors exciting and fun vacation experiences. From relaxing beaches to high octane water sports, you’ll find activities and destinations to fit any travel preference.
As Malaysians, Batam is a very convenient location, as travel takes as little as one and a half hours from Johor Bahru. This makes it a perfect place to visit for quick weekend getaways or even day trips. Of course, if you plan to stay longer, there will be even more spots to explore on Batam Island.
Here are 10 of the epic adventures you can experience in Batam, each of them enriching in it’s own way:
Barelang is a cable bridge that connects Batam with several other Southern islands in the Riau archipelago, namely Rempang, Galang and Galang Baru. It is actually a series of 6 bridges spanning more than 650 metres. Getting here requires a short one hour drive from downtown Batam. However, the breathtaking views from the bridge are definitely worth this trip.
Barelang Bridge is a must-visit, especially during sunset when you will be able to see the sun slowly descending under the distant horizon. The bridge looks beautiful at night as well, lighting up along its foundation, making its cable stays and high pylons visible. From the bridge, you’ll also be able to look out over open waters and see the Batam coast, as well as numerous small islands spread around it.
Nagoya Hill is the go-to spot for those looking for a bargain on Batam Island. This modern and comfortable shopping mall plays host to outlets selling clothes, souvenirs and more. It is especially popular among those looking for bargain electronics and appliances.
This is because the branded smartphones, cameras and laptops here are supposed to be more affordable than those back home. You’ll also find the Matahari department store and supermarket here, which you can explore for grocery items and foodstuff to bring home.
The Northern coast of Batam is home to Nongsa Beach, which is a welcoming place suitable for the whole family. There are some water activities here including banana boating. However, the overall vibe is rather relaxed and laid back.
There are shaded huts available for families and groups to have picnics. You can also play in the sand or take a dip in the calm waters here. You may want to try and go early in the morning to catch the high tide and escape the afternoon heat.
You do not need to be a Buddhist to appreciate the art and grandeur of the Maha Vihara Duta Maitreya temple, which hosts a large repertoire of Buddhist carvings. The temple complex is divided into five main prayer halls, as well as surrounded by serene and peaceful gardens.
A vegetarian canteen offering buffet-style lunch is available, as well as a cafe where you can order beverages and meals.
Near to Nongsa Beach are the Mangrove Forests of Pandang Tak Jemu. This patch of brackish water on the coast plays host to mangrove trees whose roots extend above the water.
You will be able to experience this forest on a wooden walkway built above the water, and find many picturesque spots to pose for photographs. If you’re lucky, you’ll be able to see some of the animals who live here, including fish, birds and monkeys.
One of the most famous theme parks in Batam is Mega Wisata Ocarina , located on the Northern coast of the island. Here, there’s plenty of fun activities for the whole family. Upon entry, you’ll be greeted by a host of zodiac animal statues, including a horse, tiger, rabbit, dragon and more.
There are several pools and water activities to indulge in, as well as many dry activities including flying foxes, a giant ferris wheel, a kiddy land playground, and trampoline. The park has many photographic spots overlooking the sea, making it easier for you to create plenty of memories.
Pantai Bale-Bale may not be as popular as other beaches in Batam, but it offers plenty of thrills for adventure seekers. The beach is located on the Northern coast of Batam and boasts plenty of activities under the sun. Visitors can take advantage of the banana boat rentals here, as well as a mini outbound course where young children can take advantage of a flying fox.
A small stage featuring local cultural performances entertains tourists regularly, allowing you a glimpse into the rich local culture here.
Many may not be aware of the fact that Batam hosted Vietnamese refugees from the 1970s to early 1990s. The remains of their refugee settlement is now open to the public, with a small museum where you can learn more about their lives here. The village features several buildings, including what used to be the settlement’s hospital and church.
This beautiful Balinese Hindu temple in Batam is testament to the island’s multiculturalism and tolerance. Apart from the many Buddhist temples and Muslim mosques you can visit, Pura Agung Amerta Buana should also be on your list.
Here, you’ll be treated to a carefully manicured garden filled with exquisite Balinese carvings. If you’re fortunate, you may also be able to witness some of the devotees praying and performing rituals.
All that running around going on epic adventures all over Batam can definitely tire you out. The good news is, there are many local spas that cater to your needs. Some of the best spas on the island include Tempat Senang Spa and Delta Spa & Health Club Batam. Rejuvenate your body with massages, steam saunas, herbal therapies, and much more. You’ll receive excellent services here, including packages where meals are included.
