4 Scenic Camping Spots in Batam to Sleep Under the Stars

What if your next Batam trip doesn’t involve staying in a hotel?

Beyond Batam’s malls and city streets is a surprisingly diverse outdoor playground, stretching from the forests around Muka Kuning to the beaches and islands beyond the Barelang Bridge. Depending on how adventurous you’re feeling, you can spend the night in a comfortable glamping tent, wake up surrounded by tropical forest or pitch your own tent on a quiet stretch of coast.

And because Batam is just a ferry ride away from Johor Bahru, an overnight camping trip can be an entirely different way to experience a familiar weekend destination.

If that is your in-tent, here are four free and paid spots to consider for your next Batam adventure.

1. Alio Camping Zone: Camping Without Giving Up the Creature Comforts

Best for: First-timers, families, and glampers
Why go: A convenient, beginner-friendly way to try camping or glamping while remaining close to the city.
Camping Fee: Yes

Love the idea of sleeping in a tent, but don’t want to explain to the Abang Imigresen why you’re lugging a tent across two countries?

Alio Camping Zone in Golden City, Bengkong offers one of the gentler introductions to camping in Batam. Think of it less as roughing it in the wilderness and more as taking your hotel room outdoors.

The waterfront site combines tents and outdoor spaces with creature comforts including Wi-Fi, barbecue facilities and a 24-hour front desk. Alio is within relatively easy reach of central Batam, so you won’t need to venture deep into the Barelang Islands just to spend a night outdoors.

2. Panbil Nature Reserve: Swap the Beach for the Rainforest

Best for: Hikers, eco-tourists and nature lovers
Why go: Forest trails, wildlife and nights surrounded by trees rather than city lights.
Camping Fee: Yes

At Panbil Nature Reserve in Muka Kuning, the backdrop changes from beaches and palm trees to dense tropical greenery. The 260-hectare nature reserve offers camping among its Pelawan trees, alongside outdoor activities ranging from hiking to wildlife encounters.
There are several hiking routes to explore, including the more challenging 6km Pelawan Hike, which leads deeper into the forest towards a hidden river. You can also encounter animals including deer at the reserve’s Edu Park.

The best part? You can get the feeling of disappearing into the jungle without actually disappearing very far. Panbil Nature Reserve is around 15 minutes by car from Batam Centre Ferry Terminal.

3. Pantai Elyora: Sleeping by the Sea

Best for: Beach campers, groups and sunrise chasers
Why go: White sand, sea views and a proper camping area make this an easy option for a beach-camping experience.
Camping Fee: Yes

Located around the sixth Barelang Bridge on Galang Baru, Pantai Elyora combines white sand, relatively calm water and a camping area far removed from the busier parts of Batam.

Spend the afternoon swimming or relaxing by the beach, set up camp as the crowds thin out, then settle in for a much quieter version of Batam after dark. With fewer city lights this far south, the surrounding area also makes a much better setting for an evening spent looking skywards.

Elyora isn’t completely wild, either. Facilities include toilets, food and drink vendors, gazebos and a designated camping area, making it a useful middle ground if you want a little adventure without going fully off-grid.

And there’s another reward for staying overnight: you’re already in position to experience the beautiful morning sunrise.

4. Pantai Tegar Bahari: For Campers Who Actually Want to Rough It

Best for: Experienced campers and off-grid adventurers
Why go: For the freedom and solitude of pitching your own tent away from Batam’s more developed tourist areas.
Camping Fee: No

Pantai Tegar Ketek is for travellers who hear “no facilities” and somehow become more interested.

The appeal here is precisely what the more commercial campsites don’t offer: fewer conveniences, fewer distractions and a quieter coastal setting. Rather than a prepared camping experience, you bring your own equipment and create one yourself.

Bring your own tent, drinking water, food, lighting, power supply and anything else you expect to need overnight. And, naturally, leaving nothing but footprints behind.

First Time Camping in Batam? Here Are Some Tips

  1. Rent your camping gear in Batam or choose an established campsite. Contact the campsite or rental provider ahead of your trip to confirm current prices and availability.

  1. Download your map route for offline use before leaving central Batam, especially if you’re heading to more remote parts of the island.

  1. Keep small denominations of Indonesian Rupiah (IDR) on hand for entrance fees, parking, food, drinks and other small expenses — particularly when travelling farther from the city.

  1. Research public camping spots before you go to confirm that the area is safe and whether permission is required to camp overnight.

  1. Start your Batam camping adventure from Berjaya Waterfront. After all, a great Batam camping getaway begins with the right in-tent-ions. Click here to check out ferry schedules and book your tickets.
