Massage in Batam: Tips, Prices & Promos for First-Time Visitors

Cheap massages are one of the biggest draws for tourists visiting Batam. In most areas, you’ll find shops advertising massage services or even be approached by staff as you walk by.

However, when you’re looking for a genuinely relaxing - and clean - experience, there are some situations that can mar an otherwise relaxing experience. You don’t want the awkwardness of being offered a “happy ending” or the surprise of being charged more than agreed.

Most massage centres in Batam are legitimate and professional businesses. But just like anywhere else, there are always exceptions.

Here’s a list of massage tips for first time travellers to Batam so you don’t get rubbed the wrong way.

1. Avoid overly pushy staff and out-of-the-way shops

It’s common for parlours to have staff promoting their services at the entrance. It’s also a good way to find out more about their services, gauge the legitimacy of the business, and ask about prices. However, avoid those that are too pushy or try to lead you to a different location (even if it’s just a few shops down).

In general, many reputable massage parlours are located in high-traffic tourist areas such as Nagoya Hill. Signs of a legitimate establishment include:
  • Situated on the ground floor of shoplots
  • Large and bright signboards
  • Located in malls
  • Combined with other beauty services like hair salons
You’ll want to avoid massage parlours that are situated on the upper levels of shoplots and those that have small, temporary, or obscure signage.

While fully tinted windows are a red flag in some countries, legitimate massage parlours in Batam may have their windows tinted due to the bright island sun.

2. Look out for Happy Hour massage promotions

As a reference, a typical full-body massage costs between RM50 - RM70 (Rp192,000 - Rp269,000) an hour in the Nagoya Hill area. Many massage parlours don’t entertain bargaining or haggling, but they do offer Happy Hour promotions!

It’s not a small price difference too - going during Happy Hour can bring that price down to as low as RM30 (Rp115,000)!

Happy Hour times, conditions, and prices vary so always confirm the price before you commit.

3. Pay before your massage, and don’t be afraid to walk away

In order to avoid any miscommunication or surprise charges, it’s best to make your payment before the massage. Most massage parlours in Batam already practice payment-before-service, but you can insist on this at parlours that don’t.

As long as you haven’t made a payment, you’re free to walk away and look for a different massage parlour. Listen to your gut instincts

4. Know how to handle a chatty massage therapist

Indonesian massage therapists are naturally friendly, and they may strike up a conversation with you during a massage. This is usually more common with foot massages than full-body ones.

If you don’t mind a chat, they’ll be able to give you great tips and honest insight to local life in Batam, and even recommend places to go.

If you’d rather enjoy your massage in silence, you can simply let them know politely or hint by closing your eyes.

5. Try different massage styles

Batam massage centres may offer a variety of styles such as Balinese, Thai, Tui Na (Chinese), Shiatsu, and general relaxing massages.

If you have a preference, ask ahead of time or search for a suitable parlour or spa online. Otherwise, try a different style each day and decide which one’s your favourite!

6. Tip if you like the service!

Although tipping isn’t mandatory in Batam, it’s encouraged for certain services like personal drivers and tour guides. This is also the case for massage therapists!

While they will almost never outrightly ask, a tip makes a huge difference to their income and is highly appreciated. Depending on how much you like their service, any amount between Rp20,000 (RM5) to Rp50,000 (RM13) is considered generous.
