How EV-Friendly is Johor? Here's What Owners Should Know

Range anxiety is a reality for many EV owners planning to travel long-distance - especially to places they’ve never been to before.

If you’re driving an EV to Johor for the first time, here’s everything you need to know to set your mind at ease.

Johor R&Rs are the best places to charge your EV… and yourself

If you’re taking the North-South Expressway (PLUS) to Johor, then the R&Rs are both a lifeline for you and your car’s battery.

R&R Skudai is a must-stop, as the largest EV charging hub on the highway from KL to JB with JomCharge, Shell Recharge, Charge+ and the latest Tesla V4 Supercharger stations. While waiting, there’s a comfortable seating area with free Wifi to pass the time, grab a bite, visit their open-concept toilet, or explore the many Instagrammable areas around - including a beautiful LED ball garden.

Timing is everything when it comes to charging

While you shouldn’t face any problems on regular days, charging bay availability may be affected during holidays and long weekends.

During peak travel periods, consider charging earlier than usual, even if your battery isn’t low yet, and have a backup charging location in mind in case your first choice is occupied.

Johor Bahru is the easiest place to charge your car

Johor is taking EVs seriously, with plans to have 1,245 charging stations by 2030. This commitment can already be seen in Johor Bahru, with a robust charging infrastructure ensuring that you’re never too far from a quick charge.

You’ll be able to charge your car at many hotels, and fast-charging stations are available at all major travel hubs such as Iskandar Putri. By far though, malls are your best friend. JB’s major malls such as Mid Valley Southkey, Paradigm Mall JB, and KSL City offer AC (and sometimes DC) charging, which is perfect for topping up while you eat or shop.

That being said, high-tourism spots like Johor Premium Outlets in Kulai or Desaru in Kota Tinggi already have a decent network of charging stations available, and are expanding to meet demand. For instance, Johor Premium Outlets are targeting 500 EV chargers, from the current 32.

Use apps to plan your trip ahead of time

While most major towns and cities in Johor will have charging stations available, this may not be the case the further off the beaten path you go, or if you’re not driving in using the North-South Expressway. Much like in other states, Johor also does not have a single charging network, so it may be Shell Recharge in one spot and JomCharge in the other.

For total peace of mind, use charging station mapping apps such as PlugShare and A Better Route Planner to plan out potential stops while on the road, and be assured there’s a charging station at your destination.
