First Time to Batam? Here are 5 Tips Before You Travel

Planning your first trip to Batam? Whether you’re going for a quick weekend escape or hopping over for shopping, massages, and makan, a little preparation goes a long way.

Here’s what every traveller from Malaysia should know before stepping on (and off) the ferry.

1. Fill in your e-Visa and Arrival Card early

Although you can travel to Indonesia visa-free, you still need to fill in the e-Visa form for immigration clearance. The process is simple and can be done online.

Here’s how to fill in the Indonesia e-Visa:

Step 1: Prepare a photo or scan of your passport and ID headshot photo (JPEG or PNG only)

Step 2:  Open the e-Visa website linked here

Step 3: Follow the step-by-step instructions

Step 4: Receive an email upon successful approval

Similarly, you’ll also need to fill in the All-Indonesia Arrival Card - this is basically an electronic version of the cards given on the plane before landing. Many travellers will only fill these cards in after reaching the ferry terminal, which can be stressful if there’s a huge crowd or bad connection.

Filling it in beforehand - up to 72 hours before your departure - saves you time and from stress.

Here’s how to fill in the All Indonesia Arrival Card:

Step 1: Open the All Indonesia Arrival Card website

Step 2: Fill in travel information

Step 3: Receive a QR code via email

Step 4: Save the QR code on your phone for easy transit through immigration

Just make sure you apply through the official websites (linked above) as searching on Google may lead you to immigration service providers that will charge you a fee.

2. Spend at least 72 hours in Batam to qualify for duty-free

Batam may be a shopping paradise, but don’t forget that duty-free regulations still apply when you return to Malaysia.

According to the Customs Duties (Exemption) Order, you need to spend at least 72 hours (3 full days) overseas in order to qualify. So this means a weekend trip to Batam will sadly not include duty-free shopping.

But here’s a trick to enjoy your duty-free goodies on a short trip: Since Berjaya Waterfront is also a duty-free zone,  you can buy them BEFORE you leave, and enjoy them in Batam. Indonesia doesn’t have a minimum time requirement, so you can enjoy your duty-free chocolates on the ferry or a bottle of wine at the resort.

3. Grab works in Batam

Batam’s taxis can be expensive, especially around places like ferry terminals and tourist spots. To avoid overpaying or haggling, it’s best to rely on e-hailing apps such as Gojek or Grab.

You don’t have to download a separate app if you’re already using Grab. Just open your existing Grab app, and it will automatically adjust itself for use in Indonesia.

If you’re travelling alone, then Gojek is the cheapest way to get around. Provided, of course, that you’re comfortable riding pillion on a motorbike.

4. You can go (mostly) cashless in Batam with QR payments

Batam is surprisingly QR-friendly, and works flawlessly with DuitNow. After scanning, your bank or payment app will also show you the exchange rate and the Ringgit equivalent before you approve the transaction.

QR payments are accepted at all malls, shops, and eateries. However, you should still bring some Rupiah as some roadside vendors still prefer cash.

The system is called QRIS in Indonesia, so asking for QR or DuitNow will net you some confused looks.

5. Tipping in Batam is appreciated but not mandatory

Can’t have an article about tips without tips on tipping!

For massage therapists, drivers, and hotel staff, a small tip goes a long way and is often seen as a gesture of gratitude. While they will almost never outrightly ask, a tip makes a huge difference to their income and is highly appreciated.

There are no rules on how much you should tip in Batam but, as a rule of thumb, Rp20,000 (RM5) to Rp50,000 (RM13) is considered generous.
