5 Things You Need to Know About the New ETS Train to Johor

The ETS (Electric Train Service) is one of Malaysia’s fastest and most comfortable ways to travel between west coast states. Compared to diesel trains, the ETS offers a greater balance of speed, affordability, and convenience.

Until recently, the ETS only connected the central and northern states. On the Southern end, the ETS only goes as far as Gemas in Negeri Sembilan. So if you live or want to go anywhere south of Gemas, you have to take a bus, flight, diesel train, or drive.

But that’s all about to change. The ETS route is being extended to Johor, and service may begin as early as December 2025. If everything is on schedule, here’s what you can expect ahead of your next trip to Johor.

The ETS will cut your train travel time to Johor Bahru by up to 50%

Currently, travelling from KL Sentral to JB Sentral by diesel train will take you about 7 hours.

With the ETS, travelling at a speedy 140km/h, that travel time is slashed down to 3.5 - 4.5 hours. This puts it on par with buses and driving yourself there! The only difference is that the trains are smoother, quieter, and objectively safer.

While there’s no pricing available yet, ETS ticket prices from KL Sentral to JB Sentral are estimated to cost between RM50 - RM60. Currently, ETS Gold tickets to Segamat cost about RM37.

In other words, you can now travel to Johor in safety, convenience, and efficiency. Most importantly, you won’t have to give up any of your creature comforts because…

ETS carriages are equipped with Wifi, charging ports, and more

Much like the existing carriages already in service, the locally assembled ETS3 trains will feature Wifi, USB charging ports, comfortable seating, and ample luggage space.

If you’re feeling peckish on the ride, a dining section with quick bites and drinks is just a short walk away.

But if you really want to travel in style, then look no further than Business Class seats. These are located in a private carriage and perks include more legspace, reclinable seats, and onboard dining and assistance.

These trains will service an estimated 3,000 passengers a day

A total of 10 ETS3 trains have been commissioned to serve the southern ETS line. With a seating capacity of 312 passengers per train, you shouldn’t have problems getting tickets for your trip.

However, do keep in mind that all public transportation options are typically sold out during festive and holiday periods. It’s always advisable to book your tickets as early as possible!

You will be able to stop at other towns in Johor… and (soon) even Singapore!

Yup, Johor Bahru isn’t the only stop! The southern stretch of the ETS track also includes stops in Segamat, Kluang, and Kulai. This will eventually be expanded to a network linking Johor Bahru to Butterworth and Padang Besar.

Furthermore, the stations are being opened in stages, with the ETS route to Segamat already operational since March 2025. Here are the projected dates:
  • ETS Gemas - Segamat : March 2025
  • ETS Gemas - Kluang : August 2025
  • ETS Gemas - JB Sentral : December 2025
On top of that, a separate project is also ongoing to link Johor Bahru and Singapore. The Rapid Transit System Link (RTS Link) can ferry passengers between Bukit Chagar in JB to Woodlands North in Singapore in about 5 minutes! The RTS Link is expected to start operations by December 2026.
